Alma C. Smucker





Alma C. Smucker, age 96 years, of Archbold, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 27, 2008, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold, where she had resided one month.

She was born May 16, 1912, at Lakefield, Minn., a daughter of Carl and Julia (Sangle) Rathsack. She married Lawrence “Red” Smucker on Aug. 19, 1944, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1997.

She moved to the Archbold area in 1942 and worked for the Civil Aeronautics Administration, now the FAA, during WWII.

A homemaker, she also worked at the Girl Scout National Headquarters, Sauder Woodworking Co., and Sauder Village.

She was a 4-H leader for over 25 years, and an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Burlington, and the Franklin Friendly Folks.

She is survived by four sons, Theodore (Ruth) Smucker of Reedsville, Wis., Samuel (Diana) Smucker of Archbold, Philip Smucker of Locust Grove, Ga., and Jefferson Smucker of Archbold; three daughters, Barbara (Robert) Liggett of Brevard, N.C., Laurel (James) Miller of Neligh, Neb., and Judith (Andrew) Kaufmann of Bryan; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers; and two sisters.

Services will be held today, Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Burlington with Pastor James Strawn officiating. Interment will follow in the Johnson Cemetery near Archbold.

The family suggests that memorials be given to St. James Lutheran Church or to Hospice of Williams and Fulton Counties.
