Archbold traveled to Delta on Thursday, Feb. 2, to face Wauseon and Delta in Northwest Ohio Athletic League wrestling action.

The Streaks found the going tough, falling 62-10 to the Indians and 40-39 to the Panthers to fall to 5-3 NWOAL, 24-8 overall.

“Our guys are not looking very good,” said Brian Becher. “We’re gonna have to fix some things here in the next couple weeks.”

In the opening match, Wauseon proved to be too much for AHS, capturing wins in 12 of the 14 weight classes.

Trevor Short (220 pounds) won a 15-5 major decision over Sammy Sosa, and Noah Mattin (138 lbs.) was a forfeit winner for the Streaks for their only 10 points of the match.

In the final match of the night, Archbold and Delta wrestled to a tie at 39 at the end of the match.

Delta was awarded the win after officials determined the Panthers won the tie-breaker criteria.

The match started at 285 lbs. with Anthony Gonzalez winning by forfeit.

The Streaks were void at 106 lbs. to make the score 6-6.

Shane Eicher (113 lbs.) won by forfeit, but Delta scored the next 12 points by forfeit for an 18-12 lead.

Gavin Grime (132 lbs.) earned a hard-fought 1-0 win followed by a Mattin forfeit to give AHS a 21-18 lead.

Elijah Alvarado (145 lbs.) suffered a knee injury during his match and had to default to give the Panthers six points.

Austin Wilson (152 lbs.) won by fall to help Archbold retake the lead at 27-24.

Delta scored a decision at 160 lbs. to tie the score at 27.

Kasyn Schaffner (170 lbs.) won by forfeit, but the Streaks were defeated in the next two matches by falls to give Delta a 39-33 advantage.

Short took a forfeit victory for the final 39-39 score, meaning the outcome would be determined by the tiebreaking criteria.

“It was criteria H,” said Becher. “Matches were 7- 7. Six-point matches were even, as well.

“It came down to first points scored (in matches). Gavin scored first in his match. Austin scored first in his match and then (Delta) scored first (against) Colton Soles, Mason Babcock and Ozzie Juarez.

“That’s what it came down to: three points scored first to six points scored.

“It obviously was not a good match. It’s not physically; it’s just mentally. They have to decide they’re gonna toughen up here the last couple weeks and go hard.”
