Paul H. Schoenhals, an AHS senior, has been named a semifinalist in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.

He is one of two semifinalists from Fulton County high schools.

To become a finalist in the competition for one of about 8,400 National Merit Scholarships offered nationwide, Schoenhals must meet several criteria.

He must have an outstanding academic record throughout his high school career, be endorsed and recommended by Tim Meister, AHS principal, and earn SAT test scores that confirm his earlier performance on the PSAT/NMSQT exam.

A detailed application must be submitted, including a student essay and information about Schoenhals’ participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Of the 1.5 million high school juniors nationwide who took the PSAT/NMSQT test, about 16,000 were selected as semifinalists.

About 15,000 semifinalists will be named finalists. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in college.

Brian D. Leu, Wauseon High School, was the only other Fulton County student selected a semifinalist.
