AHS Golfers Win Sectional Tourney

First Sectional Title In 27 Years

In 2007, the Archbold High School golf team placed second in the Division III sectional tournament and advanced to district competition for the first time since 1992.

In 2008, the Streaks did one better, winning the sectional championship for the first time since 1981.

Archbold beat Kalida by one stroke to take the title, Thursday, Sept. 25 at Auglaize Country Club, Defiance. The Streaks finished with a team score of 319, while Kalida ended 320. Delphos St. John’s was third, 326.

“The guys were just ecstatic,” said Kevin Miller, AHS coach, who is in his fourth year at the helm of the Blue and Gold. “We figured we would be in the hunt.

“We figured we would be in the top four and would have to play well to get out (to advance to districts); that was the big thing.

“At the turn everybody was in pretty good shape, so we knew barring a blowup we would be in the top three, hopefully. The first two, Steven Kinsman and Tyler Bernath, came in in great shape.”

Kinsman, match medalist, shot a 74. Bernath shot a 77.

“And then our number five guy, Jarrett Yoder, came in with a solid score of 91. He hasn’t played in too many tournaments. He’s one of the young guys,” said Miller.

“We still knew that the other two, Tyson Bostelman and Jacob Nafziger, had been in pretty good shape coming in at the turn for the first nine holes (Nafziger finished with an 86). It’s nerve-wracking sitting there and waiting and seeing all the scores coming in.

“We felt confident, but you never know what’s going to happen.”

Playing with golfers from St. John’s and Tinora, “we knew if we stayed with St. John’s we’d probably be in the hunt,” said Miller.

The Streaks didn’t know they’d won until the very last golfer came in.

“Tyson was the last to come in. We needed a low 80s score, and he ended up with an 82.

“It was a pleasant surprise that we won,” said the coach.

The team finished with a 6- 2 record in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League and were 9-1 in non-league matches. Overall, the Streaks are 58-8 for the year.

“It’s been a nice season. Our team averages are quite a bit lower. We’re a solid team.

“They’re a great bunch of kids, and they work hard. I do nothing. I drive the bus. They take care of what they need to do.”

At the Thursday, Oct. 2 district meet at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, “We want to improve from last year. We’d like to have the best score, maybe, we’ve ever had at districts,” said Miller.

That means AHS would have to beat a team score of 337 and finish better than sixth.

Archbold scored a 341 last year and placed 11th.

The top four teams and the top four individual low scorers not on qualifying teams, advance to the state tournament in Lockbourne, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11.

It is the 11th time in AHS history the golf team has advanced to district. Two individuals have advanced to state: Dave Plassman in 1981, and Mark Stevens in 1986.
