They may not have been the dog days of summer, but the Archbold boys basketball team had a weekend where the Blue and Gold dominated the Dogs.
First, AHS dropped the Swanton Bulldogs, Friday, Jan 11.
Then the Streaks traveled to Elida, always a powerhouse, Saturday, Jan. 12. The Blue and Gold rallied in the second half for a 70- 68 overtime victory over the Bulldogs.
In spite of Elida’s Dakota Mathias pouring in 35 points, 26 of which were in the second half, Archbold came back from a 29-14 halftime deficit and used a strong third quarter to get back into the contest.
Outscoring its host 24-10 in the third to close within one, 39-38, AHS won the fourth quarter 20-19.
The Streaks sent the game into overtime after Zeb Frank made a runner in the key with four seconds left to tie the score at the end of regulation.
Archbold (9-2) built a sixpoint lead in the extra period after Taylor Price buried a three-pointer and Evan Wyse, who went 2-2 at the foul line in OT, and Frank, who went 4-4, each hit free throws.
Mathias hit a pair of treys in OT to keep Elida (8-4) close, but Tyson Dietrich hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to give AHS a fourpoint advantage.
Mathias hit a deuce, but AHS didn’t have to inbound the ball as time ran out, giving the Streaks the 70-68 non-league victory.
Dietrich led AHS with 25 points. Frank scored 21, including three treys.
Archbold was 24-48 from the field for 50%, and 18-22 from the foul line for 82%. Elida was 26-49 from the field, including nine threepointers, for 53% and 7-15 at the foul line for 47%.
The Streaks won the rebounding battle 26-19, and committed 10 turnovers to Elida’s 13.
