Max Leppelmeier made Pettisville school history when he finished second at the Division III district golf tournament, Thursday, Oct. 4, at Stone Ridge Golf Club.

The top four teams and four individuals not on qualifying teams qualified for state.

A sophomore, Leppelmeier is the first golfer in PHS history to advance to the state tournament.

He shot a 77, three strokes behind Kalida’s Christian Nartker.

“I am very proud of Max and the way that he played Stone Ridge today,” said Mike Zimmerman, PHS head coach.

“With the course setup as a links-style course and with 15 mile-per-hour winds, it really challenged all the players today.

“He struggled to hit greens in regulation, only hitting six greens, but his putter was red hot!

“If my memory and stats are correct, he missed one putt inside of eight feet, and there were plenty of them on the higher end of the eight feet.

“His tee shots were solid, but his putter kept him in the mix.

“We thought 77 would be a score that put him into the conversation to head to Columbus, but it was a nice surprise to see that he finished the runner-up medalist.

“He ended the day with six bogeys, 11 pars, and one birdie.

“It’s been fun to watch the rest of the team support and rally around Max; they are a great group of kids. We look forward to preparing and competing in the state tournament.”

Leppelmeier plays in the Div. III boys tournament, Friday and Saturday. Oct. 12-13, at NorthStar Golf Club, Sunbury.
