It’s the second straight year McQuade has advanced to districts.

In 2017, he and doubles partner Jereme Rupp advanced to state– the first AHS boys tennis doubles team ever to advance to the state tournament.

McQuade and Short had a bye in the first round, then defeated Riemersma and Yark of Ottawa Hills 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in the second round.

They advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Imm and Hampton of Maumee in the third round.

McQuade and Short advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of third-seeded Conner Bialorucki and Zak Towne of Napoleon in the semifinals.

In the championship round, McQuade and Short were defeated by top-seeded Isaac Bowers and Logan King of Bryan 7-6 (6), 6-1 to finish second.

The top four finishers qualified for the district tournament at Bowling Green State University, Wednesday, May 16, and Saturday, May 19.

The top four doubles team and singles winners at district advance to the state tournament in Mason, Friday, May 25, and Saturday, May 26.

“Erik and Luke played the match of their lives against Ottawa Hills on Thursday,” said James Kidder, AHS coach.

“They played outstanding tennis. I was thrilled for both of them.

“They needed to get a one or two seed in the matches this past Saturday, and they did that as well. This gives them great seeding in the district tournament at Bowling Green this week.

“It’s an honor to make it to this point. So they should be proud of what they have accomplished and keep working hard toward their next goal.”
