In a press release, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced that after July 2, the state will go to a central location for printing the licenses and identification cards.

Ohio is the 42nd state to transition to centralized printing.

Under the new process, Ohioans seeking new driver licenses will still go to one of more than 180 BMV deputy registrar offices.

Lindsey Bohrer, BMV public information officer, said the deputy registrars will “vet documents that prove the following elements: full legal name, date of birth, social security number, proof of Ohio residency and proof of legal presence” (proof that a person is in the country legally).

Persons will still take a vision screening test and have their driver license photo taken at the BMV.

After July 2, when a person leaves a local BMV deputy registrar office, the person will have a temporary proof of the transaction.

Bohrer said the document, which she described as “a sheet of paper with your information,” will serve as a form of identification.

In ten business days, the new driver license will arrive by mail.

Security

The centralized printing of driver licenses will provide greater security and comply with new federal regulations.

Bohrer said, “The new driver license-identification cards will be produced in one secure, central location with restricted access in and out, as opposed to being produced at the nearly 190 deputy registrar locations.”

The central location will only print the licenses and identification cards, she said.

Are counterfeited licenses- ID cards a problem?

“We have had deputy registrars being broken into, equipment stolen, etc. By centralizing the printing of the licenses, processing will occur in a more secure location,” she said.

The centralized printing facility will be operated by a private company, which was selected through a bidding process.

In addition, centralized printing spares the state the expense of renovations for increased security at each of the deputy registrar offices.

Secure Identification

Starting in October 2020, new federal travel restrictions go into place that will require secure identification.

Those who want to use their driver license or identification card to access federal facilities or services, such as airport screenings by the Transportation Safety Administration for boarding an airplane, may obtain a license or ID card that meets federal requirements.

To obtain the secure identification, those obtaining or renewing their license or ID will be required to provide documents, including something that confirms their full name and date of birth (birth certificate or passport), social security number (social security card), and two additional documents proving their residential address (utility bills).

Persons who do not need the secure credential can obtain a standard license or ID card.

The cost of obtaining the standard license or the federally compliant card will be the same.
