AHS Musicians Earn Top Awards In Solo, Ensemble Competitions

The contest was for solos and ensembles.

Some students competed in vocal and instrumental contests.

On the vocal side, Kent Vandock, director of choral activities in the Archbold schools, said Kate Nofziger earned a “I,” or Superior, rating with her mezzo soprano solo.

Jeremiah Hartman received a Superior rating in bass solo.

Both competed in Class A.

Kelly Bilen performed an alto solo and received a Superior in Class B.

Others earning Superiors in Class B were Will Nofziger, tenor solo, and Maggie Henry, mezzo soprano solo.

Simon Short performed a baritone solo, which earned a Superior in Class C.

Earning a II, or Excellent, rating in Class A was Hannah Bowers with a mezzo soprano solo.

Earning Excellent ratings in Class B were Corrie Riley, mezzo soprano solo; Isabella Ruiz, mezzo soprano solo; Erin Reichert, mezzo soprano solo; Lucia Rodriguez, alto solo; Riah Short, mezzo soprano solo; and Drew Mc- Carty, piano solo.

Bowers also received a III, or Good rating, in Class A with an alto solo. MacKenna Whitacre earned a Good rating for her mezzo soprano solo in Class A.

Band

Beth Voll, Archbold band director, said her students earned 15 Superiors.

In Class B, Ivan Cobb earned a Superior in a French horn solo. Hartman and Dana Voll earned Superiors for trombone solos, and Bilen had a Superior with her clarinet solo.

Earning Superiors in Class C: W. Nofziger, trumpet solo; Justin Howard, trombone solo; Reichert, French horn solo; Weston Ruffer, baritone sax solo; Hartman, tuba solo; Cobb, piano solo; the euphonium trio of Mario Estrada, Trea Ponce, Connor Hagans; the clarinet trio of Bilen, Ariah Qaimari, and R. Short; the trombone trio of Hartman, Howard, and Voll; and the trumpet trio of Bowers, Hagans, and Trey Theobald.

Earning II, or Excellent ratings in Class C: Denilson Gaona, alto sax solo; the clarinet trio of Morgan Perry, Olivia Ribali, and Lucia Rodriguez; and Ruffer, piano solo.

Festival Performances

Six AHS band members participated in festival performances. In a festival performance, students receive written comments from judges but are not assigned ratings.

A trombone quartet of Rosalyn Flores, Howard, K. Nofziger, and Voll gave a festival performance, along with S. Short, trumpet solo, and Rodriguez, clarinet solo.
