PHS Boys Start Year With 2-0 Record

Pettisville opened its boys basketball season with a 2- 0 record, 1-0 in the Buckeye Border Conference, with victories over Fayette and Tinora last weekend.

PHS 56, Fayette 38

The Birds welcomed Fayette to the Bird Cage, Friday, Dec. 1, for their season and league opener.

Fayette dropped Pettisville the last time the two teams met– in the Division IV sectional tournament last season.

With both teams returning a number of players, the game looked to be a tight matchup.

“It does make it tough,” said Brian Leppelmeier, PHS head coach, about starting the season with a league contest.

“You don’t have that opportunity to tweak things. You have to get ready to go, especially with Fayette.”

The Blackbirds led 19-10 after one, and were up 28-20 when Justin Rupp took the inbounds pass and nailed a half-court shot at the buzzer for a 31-20 halftime lead.

The Black and White took control with a strong inside game led by Dillon King, Graeme Jacoby and Landon Roth, and opened up a 44-29 lead after three.

Pettisville held Fayette scoreless for the first four minutes of the final quarter while building a 24-point lead, 53-29.

Fayette outscored the Birds 9-3 in the final four minutes but never got within striking distance, giving Pettisville the 56-38 win.

“We started the way we wanted to start,” said Leppelmeier. “We made great decisions with the basketball. We hit some early shots and I think we started to settle.”

Pettisville shot 20-35 from the field for 57% while connecting on four of nine threepointers.

The Birds held Fayette to 12-37 shooting for 32%. The Eagles were three of nine from three-point range.

Pettisville won the battle of the boards 25-15.

“I was pleased with our defensive effort,” said Leppelmeier. “We really didn’t let them get into a flow.”

King led the Birds with 13 points.

Clayton Pheils and Trey Keefer led the Eagles with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

PHS 34, Tinora 25

The Rams (0-2) visited Pettisville, Saturday, Dec. 2, for a non-conference matchup.

Pettisville used a 15-2 first quarter to build a lead the Rams could not overcome.

Tinora played the final three quarters with a 23-19 scoring advantage.

The Birds shot 13-30 from the field for 43% and hit four treys on 11 attempts.

The Rams shot 10-27 for 27% and made only one of 12 three-point shots.

Detric Yoder led PHS with 10 points.

Ryan Mohr led Tinora with 12.

Pettisville won the rebounding battle 23-20, but committed 10 turnovers to four for the Rams.
