Robert G. Short

Robert Short Robert Short Robert G. Short, age 90 years, of Archbold, passed away early Monday morning, May 15, 2017, at Fairlawn Haven Care Center in Archbold.

He was born Oct. 10, 1926, at Wauseon, the son of Joseph L. and Katie (Yoder) Short.

He married Rutheda Yoder on Aug. 24, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 2006.

After graduating from Archbold High School, he served his country by working in Civilian Public Service in Indiana, California, and Pennsylvania.

He then graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1949, joining his father in the family businesses, Short Funeral Home and Short Furniture Store.

In 2005 the furniture store was sold, but he continued to be very active in the funeral home for more than 65 years, making him one of the longest serving funeral directors in Ohio.

He was named the 2005 Archbold Citizen of the Year.

He, with his wife, delivered Meals on Wheels from Fairlawn Haven to residents of the Archbold community for 30 years. They taught Sunday School at Maumee Valley Boys’ Camp several years. He was on the Board of Fairlawn Haven when it was built.

Robert loved learning about and sharing Archbold history with others. He enjoyed spending time with family, and in his later years, enjoyed sitting on his patio and visiting with those who passed by.

He was an active member of the Central Mennonite Church near Archbold, where he served as an elder for many terms, usher, church treasurer, and Sunday School teacher.

Robert was also a member of the Gideons International, Ohio Funeral Directors Assoc., and National Funeral Directors Assoc.

He is survived by three sons, Randon Short of Archbold, Royce (Anne) Short of Greer, S.C., and Reid (Becky) Short of Archbold; six grandchildren, Royal (Becky) Short, Ruby (Nick) Leininger, Rob (Emily) Short, Reilly Short, Katie Short, and Angela (Tommy) Jeffcott; nine great-grandchildren, Riah and Rustin Short, Emma, Caden and Mason “Opie” Leininger, Zach and Collin Short, and Vivienne and Isaiah Jeffcott.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant brother, Myrl; two sisters, Berniece Detter, and an infant, Geneva.

Services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Central Mennonite Church. Interment will follow in the Pettisville Cemetery.

Friends may call at Short Funeral Home in Archbold from 1-8 p.m. on Thursday.
