Village Council Buys More Land For Memorial Park

Archbold Village Council agreed to purchase an approximately 9.5-acre parcel of land to add to Memorial Park at its Monday, April 17 meeting.

Vaughn Bentz, a councilman, said the property was purchased for $9,500 per acre, making the final price about $90,250.

Harley Burkholder, Stryker sold the property.

The property is located south of the area that had been used for soccer fields on the west end of the park.

Donna Dettling, village administrator, said the purchase makes more room for the baseball diamond complex the village wants to build on the site.

While the property may not be used as a ball diamond, it could be converted to parking.

Dettling said because there is no utility service to the parcel, it would be diffi- cult to develop homes.

“This opens the door to move forward” with the development of the diamonds, she said.

In other business, council approved a contract with Krueger Construction, Archbold, to construct a sidewalk on the north side of Lafayette Street west from South Defi- ance Street to the Archbold Area School District property.

As part of the contract, Dettling said Krueger Construction will also connect storm sewers along Lafayette to an outlet, something that was not done.

The engineer estimate for the cost of the project was $58,000.

Krueger Construction submitted a bid of $51,921.20. The bid was $6,078.80, or about 11.2%, under the estimate.

Other bidders included J. Hancock & Son, West Unity, $55,000; Vernon Nagel, Inc., Napoleon, $63,250; and Bryan Excavating, Bryan $64,270.

The contract has a completion date of Aug. 4.

Also approved was a proclamation naming Friday, April 28, as Arbor Day in the village.

Village officials will hold their annual Arbor Day celebration on that day.

The celebration is one of the requirements the village must fulfill to be designated a Tree City, USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Archbold has been a Tree City for more than 30 years.

Kenny Cowell, councilman, was absent.

The next meeting is Monday, May 1, 7 pm, in council chambers.
