Students And Teachers Sincere Helpers Compassion is defined as “a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.” Archbold sixth graders are showing compassion for the people of Haiti, the island nation that was ravaged by an earthquake just over three weeks ago. Without urging from adults, the youngsters joined together to take up a collection for the impoverished people of Haiti. Lori Luderman, their social studies teacher, guided them, but it’s the students’ project. Their comments in an article in the Jan. 27 issue of this newspaper reflect their compassion, for children who have lost parents, and for parents who have lost children. Lisa Aeschliman and Lynne Hoffmire, Pettisville, are helping their kindergarten children learn compassion and many other concepts, as they put the now world-famous kindergarten bathtub to use, collecting relief supplies. Theirs are just two of many efforts underway in the area to assist the Haitian people. All of their efforts are commendable, and all citizens should be especially proud of such efforts in the schools. It proves Archbold and Pettisville children are learning more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Isn’t it commendable they are thinking globally? |
