December Unemployment Jumps In County, State

During December 2009, the Fulton County unemployment rate jumped up 1.3 percentage points, while the State of Ohio unemployment rate approached 11%.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services estimated that during December, the Fulton County unemployment rate was 14.3%, up from the November 2009 figure of 13%.

Williams County had the highest December 2009 rate in the four-county area, at 14.9%, up half of a percentage point (.5) from a revised 14.4% in November 2009.

The lowest December 2009 unemployment rate was in Defiance County, where 12.8% of the workforce was seeking employment.

ODJFS estimated that during December 2009, there were 3,300 Fulton County workers unemployed. There were 19,700 working.

In December 2009, Williams County had the 10thhighest unemployment in Ohio. Fulton County ranked 14th.

Three of Ohio’s 88 counties had unemployment rates of more than 17% in December 2009, the highest being Morgan County, in southeastern Ohio, at 17.5%.

Holmes County, in eastcentral Ohio, had the lowest December 2009 unemployment, at 7.4%.

All county data is not seasonally adjusted. Unadjusted figures for December 2009 for Ohio and the United States were 10.7% and 9.7%, respectively.

When seasonal adjustments are applied, the Ohio unemployment rate was 10.9%, while the national figure was 10%.
