Reading: A Critical Skill

Many things have changed in American society. One-parent families are more prevalent than ever. If there are two parents, both may be working more hours than ever.

There are more distractions, including computers, video games, 100 channels of television, etc.

One thing has not changed, and never will: the importance of reading to your children.

Reading is not just another box to check off on a child’s list of accomplishments. It is the fundamental cornerstone of all learning.

Reading is the key that unlocks important concepts in everything from mathematics to social studies.

It is the teacher’s role to teach the child to read. But it is the parent’s job to instill a love of reading in the child.

Parents can instill the love by making the bedtime story a special part of every night. Parents can keep interesting books around the house, and encourage the child to look through them when they are looking for something to do. They can model good behavior by reading to the children.

It’s hard to find time, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for your child.

Encourage your child to read. It’s a gift that will last a lifetime.
