Golden Notes Of Archbold's Memorable Past Ten Years Ago Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998 Steve Switzer, superintendent of Pettisville Local School, told the board he finds the new state education budget very difficult to understand. HEADLINE- Local School Districts Taking Over Control of Teacher Licensing Brent Schaffner, Fayette, fair board director, accepted a certificate of accomplishment presented to the fair board at the Ohio Fair Managers Assn, at Reynoldsburg. Kenneth Fankhauser, AHS 54, is making plans to rebuild Toledo Metal Spinning, the company he and his sons operate, which was destroyed by fire Wednesday night, Feb. 4, in Toledo. They employ 45 persons and no one will be laid off, Fankhauser said. "We're all back to work cleaning up," he said. Nona Liechty, recently elected president of the Northwest Ohio School Board Assn., told Pettisville board members her goals for the organization. She also is president of Pettisville School Board. Improvements for Middle Street were placed on the 1999 capital project budget by council. Council reviewed construction of bike paths or sidewalks on Miller Ave., and West Lutz Road. School board agreed to purchase 4.86 acres near the new elementary school from the Edna Wyse estate for $36,450. Deaths- Milan Drake, 69, Archbold; Derrick E. Miller, 19, Montpelier; Rose B. Simmons, 87, Wauseon; Elmer E. Wesche, 81, Wauseon Samuel E. Suarez, AHS '97, completed basic finance technical course, financial management school at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Twenty-Five Years Ago Wednesday, Feb. 16, 1983 AHS marching band collected $3,000 at a Chinese dinner fund-raiser. Proceeds go toward expenses when the band goes to the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., in April. Archbold Planning Commission held its first public meeting to discuss ideas on the future growth of the village of Archbold. Lester J. Trigg, county sheriff, reports 34 fires and 136 rescues occurred in the county in January. Deaths- Anna M. Gerken, 87, formerly of Ridgeville Township; Lena Classen, 60, Archbold; Bertha Funkhouser, 102, Ridgeville Corners; Amelia L. Kelm, 87, Archbold Kevin Coressel, AHS senior, was named an Insignis Scholar at the University of Detroit and a semi-finalist in the competition for one of 10 full-tuition and room scholarships. Arin L. Lauber, marine lance cpl., reported for duty with 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is the son of Edward and Bonnie Lauber. Brian Ziegler, sophomore, scored a career high 16 points in Archbold's 65-56 shearing of the Tinora Rams Saturday night. Mike Kennedy, AHS '79, plays basketball at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich. With three years substitute experience, Dave Benecke is a starting player on the OSU men's volleyball lineup. The 6- 4 senior captain will lead the Buckeyes in the middle blocker position. The third largest crop in the U.S. behind corn and soybeans is marijuana. Its value is more than $10 billion. Mutterings, by Orrin R. Taylor- Robert G. Stutzman, AHS senior, won first place in the county in the general scholarship contest for seniors. John J. Rupp was second. Gene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Rupp, attended a Washington, D. C., seminar on federal service. He was accompanied by six classmates and Paton Yoder, professor of history and political science. Sally, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Palmer, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education Thursday from BGSU. Floyd Crossgrove was appointed to serve the unexpired term of the late Clarence L. Rychener on the Fulton County Board of Education. The military address appears for Roger L. Rupp, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Mrs. Harold (Betty) Flory set a new women's record at the Archbold Bowling Alleys when she rolled a 601 series in three games. H.F. Stotzer, Carrol Wolf, C.W. Waldvogel, and Herbert Nofziger attended the Ohio Hardware Association convention in Cleveland this week. The board of Camp Palmer agreed to improvements next summer. They plan an addition to the recreation hall. The lay committee made recommendations for new buildings in the future. Seventy-Five Years Ago Wednesday, Feb. 15, 1933 Although the number of deaths in Fulton County in January reached an unusual figure, the number of births exceeded the deaths by four. The Archbold Fire Department was called five times recently: Ralph Slagle home on Ditto Street; Eicher & Sons truck garage and storage building on Vine Street; William L. Nofzinger residence on West and Union streets; Ed. Rupp residence on North Defiance St.; Henry Aschliman farm, north of Stryker. Louise Mignin, instructor of music in the Archbold schools, is making plans to have the school orchestra appear in a special broadcast program over WOWO, Fort Wayne Saturday afternoon. The string quartet is made up of Marguerite Rupp, Pauline Rupp, Helen Neuhauser, and Verile Neuhauser; the girls' trio: Flossie Leupp, Phyllis Thomas, and Mary Edith Smith; the boys' quartet: Clifford Leininger, Donald Dominique, John Steenson, and Paul Short. It was fifty years ago Valentines Day that John N. Buehrer first met his bride-to-be at the old Union House, in Archbold. She had just arrived in America from Switzerland. The building is still standing on the main street of Archbold, known as the Buehrer grocery store building. The car belonging to Irvin Miller turned over on the ice at the Lockport bridge Monday. The ligaments in the ankle of Miss Vivian Eash were torn and she suffered other bruises. Others in the car were Mrs. Emma Miller and sons, Miss Laura Miller. Irvin had a bruised leg. The Japanese war with China will end as have all other wars with China. The invading soldiers will tire of being soldiers, and will marry Chinese women and settle down to be citizens of China, and the things for which they have fought will be forgotten. China is so big, so stupid, and so sodden that one part of the country does not know what the other is doing. 100 Years Ago Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1908 Here is another Archbold business that is right in the game, Archbold Brick & Tile Co. Last season there was demand for brick and all the brickyards in this part of the state made brick. The Archbold company took a long squint ahead and made tile. The result is a tremendous demand. The company is selling to parties who drive as far as sixteen miles. The young owners believe, at this rate, their yards will be empty by tiling time. The young men deserve a lot of credit for their business nerve and energy. They are a credit to the town. A sleigh load of pupils were entertained at George Leu's, near Tedrow, Friday evening, by their school teacher Elmer Bailey. Chris Yoder says he will take contracts to put down water wells. He will guarantee all the water that can be pumped through a six inch pipe.- adv. I.L. Coy is suffering from a sprained ankle. The Archbold Improvement Assn. was formed at the Town Hall Wednesday evening. The constitution and bylaws adopted are liberal and admit anyone as a member having at heart the welfare and progress of the community. Henry Hirsch, permanent chairman; Ora E. Lauber, secretary; Henry S. Winzeler, treasurer. Meetings will be held in the office room of August Ruihley, mayor. Membership fee is $1. Friday, Feb. 14, 1908 The Toledo News-Bee claims there is talk of a deal whereby the Big Con, or the Everett- Moore syndicate will purchase the Toledo & Indiana Railroad. Everett-Moore now owns and operates the Lake Shore Electric, Toledo & Western, Toledo Street Railroad Co., and Toledo & Point Place railroad. |
