JR. HIGH SPORTS DIGEST Archbold defeated Liberty Center 28-19, Tuesday, Jan. 22. Archbold had difficulty finding the basket in the first half as its shots were off target and were down 11-7 at halftime. The second half found a very determined Archbold team that was not going to be denied a victory as the Streaks hustled, played good defense and worked very hard to take a 17-13 lead at the end of the third. They continued their hustle and determination in the fourth and outscored LC 11-6 to win 28-19. Mindy Rupp had a super third quarter as she scored 8 points. Tori Williams scored 7; Chelsea Goebel, 6; Britt Wyse, 3; Abby Short and Kristin Fonseca, 2 each. Archbold defeated Delta 50-22, Thursday, Jan. 24. The Streaks began the game with a press that led to some easy baskets. They played good defense, moved the ball well down the court, and led 30-18 at halftime. The Streaks continued their fine defensive play in the third quarter and were unselfish as they passed the ball well to open people. They led 42-22 at the end of the third and won 50-22. Williams and B. Wyse led Archbold with 10 points each. Rupp had 7; Short and Carly Wyse 6 each; Ruthie Beck, 4; Goebel, Andrea Metz and Fonseca, 2 each; Morgan Cody, 1. Archbold 7th Grade Boys Basketball Bryan visited Archbold Middle School, Tuesday, Jan. 29. The Streaks got off to a hot start, racing to a 21-3 lead after one quarter. Tyson Dietrich bucketed 10 points and Zeb Frank drained three three-pointers to lead the way. The Blue Streaks dominated the second as well, outscoring the Bears 17-5 to take a 38-8 lead into the locker room. Darin Sauder hit a pair of threes in the second. Archbold outscored Bryan 23-10 in the second half to come away with a 61-18 victory. Archbold hit nine threepointers, led by Frank's five. Sauder and David Bontrager each nailed two. Nine players scored, led by Frank with 19 and Dietrich with 16. In the last game of the regular season, the Streaks traveled to face an undefeated Evergreen team. Archbold got off to a quick start as it raced out to a 5-0 lead. After that, Archbold found it a struggle to score, scoring only six more points in the half as it went to the locker room trailing 13-11. Archbold continued to struggle offensively in the second half and was outscored 8-5 in the third. The Streaks fell behind by as many as eight points before battling back to within two in the fourth. Archbold had a chance to tie the score with less than a minute to go, but the shot fell short and Evergreen held on 30-26. Frank led the Streaks with 13 points. Archbold ended the regular season with a 12-2 record. Archbold faced Bryan in the first round of tournament action, Saturday, Feb. 2. Archbold outscored the Bears 14- 4 in the first quarter, led by Frank with 10 points. The Streaks built on their lead in the second and led 26-10 at the half. Taylor Price scored all 7 Archbold points in the third as the Streaks continued to build their lead. When the final buzzer sounded, Archbold won 45-18. Frank and Price had 13 points each. Stuart Wyse, Dylan Lantz, Levi Gerig, Devin Shannon and Tyson Dietrich also scored. Archbold 7th Grade Girls Basketball Archbold traveled to Liberty Center, Tuesday, Jan. 22 and beat the Tigers 25- 11. The Blue Streaks jumped out to a 10- 1 lead at the end of the first quarter on their way to the win. "The girls continue to work hard on their rebounding," said Barb Figgins, coach. "We collected a team total of 32 rebounds and continue to play good defense." Scoring: McKenzie Yoder, 8 points, 5 rebounds; Hanna Allison, 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals; Tatum Smith, 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals; Caroline Vonier, 2 points, 1 steal; Darian Oberlin, 2 points, 3 rebounds; Tressa Parsley, 2 points, 2 rebounds; Madison Short, 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals; Taylor Coressel, 1 point, 6 rebounds, 4 steals. Archbold hosted Delta, Thursday, Jan. 24. The Streaks improved to 10-2 with a 16-5 victory. "We continue to play good defense, in which we were able to collect a team total 13 steals," said Figgins. "Again we had a good night in rebounding, with 21." Scoring: Smith, 4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists; Yoder, 4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists; Short, 2 points, 3 rebounds; Amanda Lovejoy, 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist; Oberlin, 2 points, 1 steal; Allison, 2 points. Archbold beat Bryan 30-20, Tuesday, Jan. 29. The Streaks trailed 8-4 at the end of the first. Archbold outscored the Bears 26-12 over the next three to bring home the victory. "We continue to play good defense, collecting 10 steals. We also grabbed a team-total 17 rebounds," said Figgins. Scoring: Yoder, 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists; Coressel, 8 points, 2 steals, 3 assists; Allison, 4 points, 4 rebounds; Oberlin, 2 points, 2 steals, 2 assists; Smith, 2 points, 2 steals, 2 assists; Parsley, 3 rebounds, 1 assist. Archbold finished its regular season with a 12-2 record after a 35-12 victory over Evergreen, Thursday, Jan. 31. "Everyone contributed in the victory with balanced scoring and good defense," said Figgins. Scoring: Yoder, 7 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals; Coressel, 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists; Alora Drewes, 4 points, 1 assist, 1 steal; Parsley, 4 points, 2 assists; Lovejoy, 2 points, 6 rebounds; Lenny Lehman, 2 points, 1 steal, 2 assists; Oberlin, 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists; Allison, 2 points; Madison Short, 2 points, 2 rebounds; Ella Weaver, 2 points, 2 steals; Vonier, 3 steals. Archbold Middle School Wrestling Archbold competed in the Napoleon Middle School Wrestling Tournament the weekend of Jan. 26. There were 11 teams represented. The Streaks finished third with 188.0 points. Archbold finished behind a very solid Elida team, who won with 252.00 points, and Liberty Center, second with 194.5. Individual champions were Austin Ripke, 112 pounds; Danny Young, 124 lbs.; Jordan Cowell, 136 lbs.; Tyler Rufenacht, 142 lbs.; and Zach Driver, 152 lbs. Ripke wrestled a very strong tournament, pinning his way to the finals, where he defeated Norwalk's Nick Davis at 4:12. Young finished with a convincing 17-1 win over Defiance's Devin Bowers after a hard-fought overtime victory in the semifinal over Liberty Center's Andrew Lewallen. Cowell bumped up a weight class to compete at 136 lbs. In doing so, he faced one of the tournament's undefeated wrestlers, Delphos St. John's Kyle Neumeier, in the finals. Cowell came away with an 11-6 decision. The win also helped him earn the tournament's Most Valuable Wrestler award, voted on by the coaches. Rufenacht also wrestled a very strong tournament, pinning his way to the final, where he pinned Elida's Daunte McNeal in 1:28. Driver pinned Delphos St. John's Logan Heiling in 1:18 to claim the 152-lb. title. Additional place finishers: 118 lbs.: Oliver Stuckey, 2nd; 130 lbs.: Cody Kovneskey, 3rd; 174 lbs.: Kellen Seaman, 3rd. Archbold 8th Grade Girls Basketball Archbold opened tournament play, Saturday, Feb. 2, with a 37-31 victory over Napoleon. Both teams had difficulty scoring in the first quarter, and the Streaks led 5-4. In the second, Britt Wyse scored six points, Kristin Fonseca hit a three-pointer, and Tori Williams had a point to take a 15-11 lead into the locker room. Napoleon turned up the heat both offensively and defensively to pull within one at the end of the third. Napoleon took a six-point lead during the fourth, and with two minutes to go Carley Wyse had a three-point play plus another foul shot, Abby Short made three foul shots, and Williams scored seven points to seal the victory. B. Wyse scored 10 points. C. Wyse and Williams each had 8; Short, 5; Mindy Rupp and Fonseca, 3 each. Archbold's next game is Thursday, Feb. 7, 4:30 p.m. at Bryan against the winner of the Evergreen-Swanton game. ------ The raisin industry in California got its start from the early missionaries who planted the first grapevines. |
