Birds Pick Up 57-32 BBC Win At Fayette

The Pettisville girls basketball team sprinted out to a 13-4 first-quarter lead at Fayette on its way to a 57-32 Buckeye Border Conference victory, Thursday, Jan. 31.

Pettisville is 12-6, 7-2 BBC. Fayette dropped to 4-13, 4-5 BBC.

The score was knotted at 4 when Jodi Spotts broke the tie with 2:50 left in the first. She started a 9-0 run for the Birds as they led 13-4 after one.

Pettisville upped the lead to 18-4 before Rachel Rash hit the second of two free throws to score the Eagles' first points in more than six minutes. The Birds increased the advantage to 24-10 when a foul shot by Danni Wyse and a three-pointer by Katie Pfund closed the gap to 24-14.

They were the last points scored by Fayette in the half. Rachel Beck hit a basket and Erica King hit two straight treys, including one at the buzzer after Haley Nofziger intercepted an Eagle pass, for a 32-14 PHS halftime lead.

Fayette outscored Pettisville 10-9 in the third quarter to cut the difference to 41-24 going into the final quarter. The closest the Eagles got in the final quarter was 14 points as the Blackbirds outscored them 16- 8 to coast to a 57-32 win.

Chelsea Schmucker scored the Birds' final points with a bucket under the basket at the buzzer.

Pettisville shot 17/38 from the floor, including four treys, and 19/22 from the free-throw line. Spotts led PHS with 14 points. King and Brittany Weber added 11 and 10, respectively.

Fayette was 12/38 from the field, including five treys, and 3/13 from the line. Pfund, who made three three-pointers, led the Eagles with 11 points.

Pettisville out-rebounded Fayette 25-18.

"I thought our defense was consistent and we rebounded the ball well," said Jason Waldvogel, PHS coach. "Offensively we shot the ball very well and converted our free throws tonight."
