In a pair of non-league road contests last week, Archbold suffered a 55-51 overtime loss to Defiance, then fell to Tinora 39-37 on a near last-second shot.
The Streaks, ranked seventh in Division III in last week's Associated Press Ohio boys basketball poll, slipped to 14-4. Tinora improved to 10-6.
Just a few weeks ago the Streaks were on the receiving end of a Gene Goering buzzerbeater to beat Patrick Henry. This time the Rams reversed the role, as Jon Gerken nailed a 12-footer with only four seconds left on the clock.
"We never know who is going to be the leading scorer," said Rob Mahnke, THS head coach. "We usually have eight or nine guys scoring every night, and Jon (Gerken) has really come on.
"We like our balanced attack, but Jon is our go-to guy down the stretch. I was going to call a time-out, but he had the ball, so I thought I would just let him shoot it."
Tinora has been coming up with huge wins in the past few weeks. In fact, the Rams have cleaned house in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League.
"This is a big win for us. We beat PH, Wauseon, and now Archbold- we are just darn proud of that."
A sluggish first half for both squads had the Blue and Gold holding a slim 15-14 halftime lead.
Layne Schroeder, a THS senior, buried a three-pointer from the top of the arc to start the second half. The Rams built a 20-15 lead just minutes into the second half.
Archbold, which shot 35% from the field, finally scored when Gene Goering hit a jumper at the 4:20 mark. It was one of only two field goals the Streaks hit in the quarter, as the Ram defense was stifling.
Trey Smith added the other field goal and Goering added a pair at the free-throw line, but AHS trailed 22-21 with 1:40 left in the third.
Schroeder struck again, nailing another three from the top of the key at the buzzer to give Tinora a 25-21 advantage to start the final eight minutes.
Archbold looked as if it was ready to light up the scoreboard to start the final period when Smith hit a three at the start of the fourth.
Colton Martinez came up with a steal and spotted Smith for two more, giving AHS a 26- 25 lead.
Brad Cary quickly put an end to Archbold's good fortune. Schroeder spotted Cary for two; the Ram was fouled and converted a conventional threepoint play, giving Tinora a 28- 26 lead.
The two squads went back and forth over the next five minutes. Archbold led 31-28 on a Smith three; Tinora answered, scoring the next seven points.
AHS knotted the score again when David Rupp hit a putback. Goering added to his game-leading 16 points with a deuce, tying the score at 35.
Following a change of possessions the Streaks called a timeout with 1:07 left, but the Blue and Gold turned over the ball. After eating 30 seconds off the clock, Mahnke called a timeout.
Martinez was whistled for a foul, sending Taylor Wiemken to the charity stripe to shoot a one-and-one. The junior calmly sank both shots, giving the Rams a 37-35 lead.
Goering came down and buried a 12-footer, knotting the score with 12 seconds left.
After Gerken gave the Rams a 39-37 lead with four seconds left, AHS called a time-out, but had to go the length of the court. Goering got off a shot from the corner, but it fell short.
"Tinora's defense did not surprise us. It was just one of those things; we didn't shoot for beans," said Doug Krauss, AHS head coach. "We were just stagnant offensively. We were not patient enough to be consistent in our offense.
"I thought we got better in the second half and got better movement. We didn't break them down. We got them in the bonus in the third quarter, and we didn't get to the line a whole lot in the second half.
"We worked hard to get back in it. We came down and tied the game up; they just got too good of a look. Give them credit. They hit the shot.
"We will go back to the drawing board. We have a big league game against Delta this week, and we will see what we are made of- how the guys stick together- and see if they can bounce back."
Both teams shot 35% from the field. AHS out-rebounded Tinora 29-21 but committed more turnovers, 17-14.
Bulldogs Drop Streaks
Archbold traveled to Defiance (10-5), Tuesday, Jan.29. The foul line can make or break a team, and for one of the few times this season, the Streaks were shut out at the charity stripe in the closing seconds of regulation, falling 55-51 in overtime.
With a seven-point lead and less than two minutes to play, it looked as if the Streaks were going to sneak away with a win. But six consecutive misses at the foul line proved to be fatal for the Blue and Gold, as the Bulldogs rallied to knot the score at 46, sending the game into overtime.
The Bulldogs outscored AHS 9- 5 in overtime for the win.
Gene Goering led AHS with 17 points. Justin Rupp chipped in 16.
Jordan Mack's season-high 23 points led Defiance.
