New Street Will Connect To Burke

The unnamed street that will extend south from Lafayette will extend an additional 550 feet to the south, connecting with Burke Street.

Archbold Village Councilmen discussed the project during their Monday night, Feb. 4 meeting.

Dennis Howell, Archbold village administrator, said the street was extended to connect to a second entrance at the southern end of the Archbold Evangelical Church parking lot.

The church is currently under construction.

Howell said original drawing for the church parking lot called for the entrance and exit to connect at the intersection of Lafayette Street and the as-yet unnamed north-south street.

That, Howell said, created a safety hazard, so the church redesigned the lot with an access to the north, and a second at the southern end.

But a parking lot access without a street connected to it is worthless, so the street will be extended.

At the same time, the parking lot entrance lines up with Burke Street. Burke Street is currently a dead-end street.

The unnamed street will tie into Burke, he said.

Howell said the extension of the unnamed street would cost about $75,000 additional, on top of the $408,308.75 winning bid of Heer Excavating, Archbold, to build the street.

Original Contract

Under the original contract approved by council, Monday night, Oct. 1, 2007, Lafayette Street will be extended 400 feet to the west to serve the church.

The unnamed street will extend south from Lafayette Street, between the church property and the western edge of Memorial Park.

The original plan called for the street to extend 300 feet to the south.

Two Weeks

Howell said village officials have already discussed the change in the plans with Heer Excavating officials.

He told council members a change order, adjusting the contract with Heer Excavating, will be presented to them at their Monday night, Feb. 18 meeting.

Council members Kenny Cowell and Kevin Morton were absent from the meeting. All voters were unanimous.- David
