Three ticks are left on the clock in the Patrick Henry House of Heat.
Doug Krauss, Archbold head boys basketball coach, calls for a time-out.
Justin Rupp inbounds the ball, which finds its way into Gene Goering's hands. Six-foot- 6 Kyle Tietje is in Goering's face.
The senior Blue Streak sinks a quick fade-away jumper.
Archbold students swarm the court: time left on the clock, 00:00; final score, Archbold 42, PH 41.
"We drew the play up and pretty much got what we wanted, the ball in Gene's hand with a chance to win, and I like our chances," said Krauss. "He was closely guarded, and from my angle that ball was close to being blocked. Gene was just that well guarded.
"That is a big-time player making a big-time play."
"I think I will be seeing that shot quite a bit the rest of this year." said Kent Seeman, PH head coach.
The Patriots' perfect Northwest Ohio Athletic League mark came to an end with Goering's bucket. The win upped the Streaks' record to 13-1, 6-0 NWOAL. The Pats fell to 7-4, 3- 1 NWOAL.
"We are getting wins, but we do have some things to work on," said Krauss. "These types of games are going to help us down the stretch. Thank goodby ness PH is Division IV this year and we won't have to play them again."
Goering became Archbold's all-time leading scorer at Ottawa Glandorf, Saturday, Jan. 19. Entering the contest he had 1421 points, needing just two points to break Dan Borcherdt's record of 1,422 career points, set from 2002-05.
Goering set the record at the foul line at the 5:15 mark of the first period, canning two shots. He finished with a game-leading 25 points, although the Streaks came home with a 65-59 loss.
Barnburner At PH
The Streaks, ranked third in Div. III, had their hands full facing the zone defense of the Patriots, along with the twin towers of Kyle and Kevin Tietje, both listed as 6-6. Throw in 6- 3 starter Matt Rettig, and the Pats had a size advantage.
A size advantage is nothing new to the Blue and Gold, who even unofficially out-rebounded their hosts 28-22.
A low-scoring first half had AHS ahead 23-22 going into the locker room and 32-29 after three.
Kyle Tietje, who led PH with 16 points, opened the fourth with a steal. He was fouled and made one at the charity stripe. Goering scored back-to-back buckets and David Rupp nailed a three, while PH's Rettig scored on a put-back, and AHS led 39- 32.
After three trips down the court and three turnovers, the Pats started chipping away at the lead. Rettig converted a steal into two points. Kyle Tietje scored a conventional three and then hit a jumper, knotting the score at 39 with 1:10 left.
"We were up seven and things were looking good," said Krauss. "We have talked a thousand times, when you have a lead that is the time to win a ball game. We didn't do what we had to do at that time to win."
D. Rupp scored one from the charity stripe with 59 seconds remaining for a 40-39 lead. AHS was whistled for a foul on PH's next trip down the court, and Kyle Tietje went to the foul line to shoot a one-and-one with seconds left.
Getting a Patriot roll on the first shot, the senior also made the second, giving PH a 41-40 lead.
With 49 seconds remaining, Rettig came up with a steal for PH. Botjer was sent to the foul line as Goering was called for a foul. One of PH's better free throw shooters, Botjer faced a one-and-one, but he missed his first shot and Archbold grabbed the rebound.
With time running down, Krauss called a time-out. A chess match was now in place, as Seeman called back-to-back time-outs for PH.
The rest is in the books. J Rupp found Goering on the inbounds pass, and Goering's shot hit nothing but net as the buzzer sounded.
"We shot ourselves in the foot tonight with the turnovers we had, but tip your hat to PH with the effort they gave and the intensity they brought to the table," said Krauss. "They played zone pretty much the entire game, and we struggled with that.
"We didn't attack their zone defense very well in the first half, but we hung in there enough and made enough threes to hang in there.
"We came back in the second half and got a little bit better movement against the zone, and got Gene the ball a couple of times in the middle. We didn't do that in the first half."
"The last 40 seconds we came up with a big steal, (but) we didn't convert," said Seeman. "We called a couple of time-outs and tried to guess as to what Archbold was going to do. We felt they where going to try and throw a lob pass.
"Gene (Goering) just popped out. We thought we had him; he was against a 6-foot-6 kid with a hand in his face. Give (Goering) credit; he knocked down the shot."
Goering Sets Record In Loss To OG
The Streaks dropped to 13-2 with the 65-59 loss, while the Titans improved to 10-4.
AHS trailed 17-15 after the first eight minutes and 29-27 at the break, as Goering was held to eight points in the first half.
The Titans pulled away in the third, outscoring Archbold 21-13. The Streaks made a run in the final eight minutes, outscoring OG 19-16 for the 65-59 final.
Goering made 11 of Archbold's 19 fourth-quarter points.
Besides Goering's 25 points, Trey Smith also hit in double digits for AHS, with 19.
The Streaks out-rebounded OG 30-26, and were 23/51 from the field for 45%. OG was 25/45 for 55%.
