County Unemployment Tops 6% In December
It's the highest unemployment rate in the Four County area. It is one tenth (.1) of a percentage point ahead of Henry County, which had 6.5% in December, ODJFS estimates said. Fulton County unemployment in October was 6%, dropped to 5.4% in November, but then climbed 1.2% in December. Henry County saw its estimated unemployment jump from 5.1% in November to 6.5% in December, a jump of 1.4%. ODJFS estimated there were 23,800 persons in the Fulton County labor force. The figure is made up 22,200 workers who are employed, and 1,600 who are unemployed and seeking employment. Fulton County in a three-way tie for 31st highest unemployment rate in Ohio in December 2007 with Trumbull County and Columbiana County. High, Low Across Ohio, unemployment rates ranged from a low of 4.2% in Delaware County, in central Ohio, and Mercer County, in west-central Ohio, to 10.2% in Morgan County, in southeastern Ohio. There were 11 of Ohio's 88 counties with unemployment rates of below 5%. In addition to Delaware and Mercer they were Holmes 4.3%; Franklin, Hancock, Union, and Warren 4.7%; Auglaize and Lawrence 4.8%; and Hamilton and Washington, 4.9%. Two counties had unemployment of 10% and above. Besides Morgan, Meigs County, also in southeastern Ohio, had 10%. Seven other counties had rates above 8%, but below 10%. They were Pike 9.9%; Huron and Monroe 9.3%; Ottawa 9.1%; Adams 8.8%; Vinton 8.6%; and Jackson 8.4%. State, Nation County unemployment data is not seasonally adjusted. The comparable unadjusted figures for Ohio and the United States were 5.8% and 4.8% for December 2007, as estimated by ODJFS. When seasonal adjustments are applied, the national unemployment rate is 5% for December.
