AHS Girls Improve To 11-4 With Two Wins The Archbold girls basketball team improved their win streak to five with victories at Swanton and Holgate last week. The Streaks defeated Swanton 51-33, Thursday, Jan. 10, in a Northwest Ohio Athletic League matchup, and Holgate 49-36, Saturday, Jan. 12. Archbold is 11-4, 4-2 in the NWOAL. AHS 51, Swanton 33 The first quarter stayed close. Three minutes in, Dani Newman had an excellent assist to Devin Newman for a 4-2 lead. Swanton came back and scored seven straight points to lead 9- 4. The lead went back and forth, and Swanton led 17-14 after one. Only nine points were scored in the second period. Swanton scored with less than five minutes remaining in the half and not again until the last seconds. Alyssa Schaub tied the game at 19, but the last-second Swanton bucket gave them a 21-19 advantage at the half. Dani Newman tied the score at 21 early in the third. Bri Wyse was credited with an assist to Abbey Graber as AHS tied the score at 24. After AHS took a 26-24 lead, the Bulldogs sank a threepointer. Graber answered a minute later with a trey to put Archbold up by two, 29-27. Andrea Allan widened the lead to 31-27 after a pass from Wyse. A three by Allan and two free throws by Dani Newman gave AHS a 36-29 third-quarter lead. With six minutes left, Swanton sank a three, closing the gap to 36-32. Swanton scored only once more. The Streaks were fouled and made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter. AHS was 70% on its foul shots for the game. Stacey Wyse scored a last basket for the 51-33 final. "It was a good defensive effort. We played more aggressive the second half and rebounded well," said Kevin "Scoop" Miller, AHS coach. "Our bench provided a lot of intensity, which was huge." Devin Newman had seven of Archbold's 36 rebounds. Swanton had 25. Dani Newman led AHS with 12 points. Graber pitched in 10. Paige Onweller, the NWOAL's second-leading scorer who averages 17.5 points per game, scored 13 for the Bulldogs. The Archbold junior varsity team also won, 65-21. AHS 49, Holgate 36 "We played great team defense and had nice rebounding. We were also very unselfish on the offensive end, which was great to see," said Miller. Dani Newman led all scorers with 16 points. S. Wyse was also in double figures, with 12. The Streaks were on top at every quarter mark, and had doubled Holgate's score at halftime for a 26-11 lead. Archbold out-rebounded Holgate 31-23. B. Wyse hauled down 11. AHS shot 53 percent (21/40) from the field. Holgate was 11/49 for an ice-cold 22%. The Archbold JV won 42-25.
