A fast start and hot shooting propelled the 12-1 Archbold boys basketball team to a 68-31 Northwest Ohio Athletic League victory at Swanton, Friday, Jan. 11.
The Streaks, ranked fifth in Division III in the first Ohio High School Athletic Association boys basketball poll, upped their league record to 5-0. Swanton fell to 8-2, 3-2 in league action.
"Archbold is a quality program, we knew we had our work cut out for us," said Tim Zieroff, Swanton head coach. "We didn't come out and compete at the level we needed to be in this game, and that is how the score got to where it was."
Two starters for SHS did not play.
Gene Goering, AHS senior, provided Archbold's fast scoring, with 15 of his game-high 22 points in the first eight minutes. Holding a 21-15 lead after the first stanza, Archbold's defense held Swanton to just one field goal in the second and took a 31-19 advantage into the locker room.
Justin Rupp also scored in double digits, with 11. As a team the Blue and Gold scorched the nets, shooting 56%.
Swanton's troubles continued in the second half, bucketing just eight points in the third quarter and four in the final eight minutes. Chad Lewis paced the Bulldogs with 18 points.
As hot as Archbold was from the field, the Bulldogs couldn't even heat a small doghouse, shooting just 30 percent from the field.
Archbold also dominated the boards, hauling in 40 rebounds to Swanton's 16.
"You can't shoot 30 percent against Archbold, and you can't get out-rebounded 40 to 16," said Zieroff. "Give credit to Archbold. It's not like we didn't have uncontested shots, and it's not like they weren't keeping us off the glass, and they weren't crashing the glass. Credit Archbold for those numbers."
"We have been preaching all year to get out and go," said Doug Krauss, AHS coach. "We haven't done that consistently.
"Here at Swanton they have a nice big floor, and it gives us more room to run. I like running up and down the floor, and we have the athletes to do that.
"We talked about our rebounding at halftime. We thought Swanton was being pretty aggressive on the glass. We wanted to do better ourselves, and the kids responded in the second half. It was guys getting after it, and our kids are starting to do that, and that is positive."
AHS 56, Napoleon 55 2OT
It took double overtime for the Streaks to pick up their 11th win over nearby rival Napoleon, Tuesday, Jan. 9 at the Grand Canyon.
The charity stripe once again proved to be the Streaks' bread and butter as J. Rupp nailed two free throws with one second remaining in double overtime to lift the Blue and Gold past the Wildcats 56-55.
Napoleon held a two-point lead with time winding down in regulation when David Rupp hit a put-back as the buzzer sounded, sending the game into the first overtime.
In the first overtime Napoleon's Wes Hesterman had the chance to give his team the win, going to the foul line with no time left on the clock. But the Wildcat missed both attempts.
Trey Smith led Archbold with 14 points. J. Rupp and Goering chipped in 13 each.
