After a 2 1/2-week layoff, the Archbold wrestling team returned to the mats Thursday, Jan. 10, traveling to Swanton to face the Bulldogs and Evergreen.
Archbold opened with a 48- 33 defeat of Swanton and then dropped Evergreen 44-27.
The Streaks upped their record to 19-10. They are 3- 1 in the dual meet portion of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League.
"We don't have a lot of time left in this season," said Brian Becher, AHS head coach. "We have about five weeks of practice left and we have a match just about every single week, so the season is really going to start going faster.
"The nice thing is we have wrestled the better teams on our schedule. We don't have many Division I teams left to wrestle. It will be nice to get into these dual meets with schools our size.
"I told the kids we have been through the tough part of our schedule, and now we will get to the easy part and hopefully fine-tune things for the postseason."
AHS 48, Swanton 33
Wrestling started at 112 pounds. With the Streaks void at 112 lbs., Swanton took an early 6-0 lead.
TJ Weirauch (119 lbs.) recorded a fall at 1:35 over Nick Schaffer to knot the score at 6. AHS was void at 125 lbs.
Ian Redd (130 lbs.) recorded a fall at 1:28 over Jordan Szozda, knotting the score at 12. Following two AHS forfeits at 135 and 140 lbs., Swanton held a 24-12 lead.
The Bulldog advantage did not last long. Chad Rufenacht and teammate Tyler Short picked up pins at 145 and 152 lbs., tying the score at 24. Swanton's Austin Reiner (160 lbs.) defeated Jared Leininger 11-6.
Swanton recorded its last victory at 171 lbs., when Jerry St. Claire pinned Shem Neuenschwander, giving the Bulldogs a 33-24 lead.
Mickey Britenriker (189 lbs.) closed the gap with a fall over Dustin Arnold. Jordan Gracia (215 lbs.) pinned Dan McNutt for a 36-33 AHS lead.
Jacob Badenhop (275 lbs.) kept things rolling with a pin over Brian Smith, and Matt Jacoby (103 lbs.) took a forfeit for Archbold for the 48-33 final.
AHS 44, Evergreen 27
Against Evergreen, the Blue and Gold was again void at four weight classes.
The Streaks forfeited at 119 and 125 lbs. before Redd picked up his second win of the evening at 130 lbs. Also picking up pins were Rufenacht (145 lbs.), Short (152 lbs.) and Leininger (160 lbs.)
Neuenschwander (171 lbs.) recorded a 13-7 decision over Devin Perdue, and Britenriker (189 lbs.) scored a narrow 6-4 win over Eric Volkman.
Evergreen was void at 215 and 275 lbs., and picked up wins at 103 lbs. when Brandon Bettinger recorded a 5-0 decision over Jacoby.
Weirauch (112 lbs.) dropped Cody Rade with a 16-3 major decision for the 44-27 final.
"We gave up 24 points in forfeits in both matches, so we got 12 scored on us. We didn't wrestle too bad," said Becher. "I was pleased with some things that guys were working on.
"Jordan (Gracia) looked really good in his first match against a decent kid; he seems to be getting more confidence all the time. Another big match was Ian (Redd) against Szozda; kind of caught Ian a little, but he scrambled and got the pin.
"We've still got guys that are not getting after people offensively, and then there are guys I am starting to take for granted and don't give a lot of press to. Chad (Rufenacht) and Tyler (Short)- those two are to the point where I expect them to win.
"Those two guys are wrestling really well for me. I don't have anything to critique them, because they are doing exactly what we want them to do.
"TJ Weirauch is still a little sloppy, but he always battles no matter what the score is. It's almost like he is out there and he doesn't care what is going on in the match; he is just out there to score points. He is exciting to watch for everyone but the coaches.
"I am proud of the way he is wrestling right now. He just doesn't quit. I just wish he would stick to a little more sound technique, but we will work on that in the next couple of weeks."
