Blue Streaks Derail Locos 44-37

The Archbold girls basketball team won its third straight game with a 44-37 Northwest Ohio Athletic League victory at Montpelier, Friday, Jan. 4.
The win raised the Streaks' record to 9-4, 3-2 NWOAL. Montpelier dropped to 1-10, 0-4 NWOAL.
The first quarter remained close throughout, with neither team leading by more than two points. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 8.
MHS scored early in the second period for a two-point lead.
But Archbold took back the advantage with the combined efforts of Dani Newman and Stacy Wyse for a 12-10 lead.
Archbold kept Montpelier scoreless for about four minutes in the second quarter and expanded the lead by five.
The Locomotives took a timeout later in the second and regained momentum for a 16-16 deadlock at halftime.
A Bri Wyse assist to Newman early in the third broke the tie.
After Montpelier scored, S. Wyse answered to keep Archbold's two-point lead. Newman hit a three-pointer for a 23-18 lead. The Blue Streaks led 29- 26 with one quarter left.
Less than 15 seconds into the fourth quarter, B. Wyse stole the ball and went down the court for a fast break layup and a 31-26 advantage.
The quarter was filled with foul shots on both sides; three MHS players fouled out. But neither team could hit its free throws; Archbold was 7/16 from the charity stripe in the fourth; Montpelier was 5/10.
The Streaks were 13/30 at the foul line for the game; the Locos were 7/13.
With less than two minutes left, Montpelier grabbed an offensive rebound from a foul shot to pull within three, 40-37.
AHS slowly widened the gap with foul shots by Devin Newman and Abbey Graber, and led 42-37.
With 17 seconds left, Graber nailed both foul shots to seal the game, 44-37.
"Montpelier played very aggressive and hurt us on the boards. We played more aggressive the second half, but did not cash in at the foul line," said Kevin "Scoop" Miller, AHS head coach.
MHS out-rebounded AHS 34- 25.
Dani Newman led all scorers with 17 points. S. Wyse added 11.
