Streaks Put The Hammer To Locomotives
by Scott Schultz Buckeye Sports Reporter

The Archbold boys basketball team kicked off 2008 with a bang, defeating visiting Montpelier 71-32, Thursday, Jan. 3.

The Streaks improve to 10- 1, 4-0 in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League. The Locomotives, under T.J. Hammer, head coach, fall to 1-7, 0-3 NWOAL.

Coaches always like fast starts, and a fast start was all the Blue and Gold needed to quickly dispose of the Locos.

Montpelier opened with Ryan Hellar scoring a five-footer. Archbold's Gene Goering answered with a pair at the charity stripe.

Brit Moore answered as the Locos took a 4-2 lead minutes into the contest.

From there it was all downhill for Montpelier. Archbold went on a 13-0 run to close out the quarter with a 15-4 lead.

"Montpelier is an inexperienced team, and we are playing at home," said Doug Krauss, AHS head coach. "We hoped we could get things off to our advantage and we did. That was important for us. All things considered, we had a good start."

Montpelier's most productive quarter was the second, as they rattled off 11 points. But the Streaks held a 37-15 lead at the break.

Goering canned 11 points in the first 16 minutes and finished the contest with 18, along with teammate Trey Smith, who also bucketed 18.

Krauss worked his bench into the game, putting 10 players in the scorebook. The Streaks, who have made a living at the foul line, struggled, connecting on 27 of 41 from the free-throw line.

"It's good that we got kids some playing time," said Krauss. "The guys off the bench have key roles for us, and it was nice to get those JV guys some time as well.

"As far as tonight's foul shooting- it happens. Really don't have an answer for that. You have to go up there with a good mind set, and sometimes you do and sometimes you don't."

"Archbold went on that 13-0 run midway through the first quarter, and we can't get down 13, 15 points against a team like Archbold," said Hammer. "Just can't do it.

"Our kids played hard. We had four starters on the bench with foul trouble in the second quarter. We were playing hard and got called for it. Our kids didn't back down and kept battling."

The Locos, led by Moore and Hellar with eight points each, connected on 5/8 from the charity stripe.

The Archbold defense held the visitors to nine points in the third period and eight in the fourth. On the offensive side Archbold dumped in 18 points in the third and 16 in the fourth for the 71-32 final.

"We are starting to make some strides in our game," said Krauss. "We have some big games coming up on the road, and that will tell us where we're exactly at.

"Even though we have wins there are still things we can work on at the defensive end, and we have to keep working on our rebounding. With our size we have to make sure we cover things; hopefully we continue to work hard and get better."
