Pettisville Hands Ottawa Hills First Loss

The Pettisville boys basketball team used a 15-7 third quarter on its way to a 64-58 victory over previously-undefeated Ottawa Hills, Friday, Dec. 28.
The Green Bears came to Pettisville with a 6-0 record. The Birds up their record to 7-1 with the win.
The Green Bears held a 14-13 edge after one quarter. Seven of their points were made at the foul line.
Ottawa Hills scored the first five points of the second with a score under the basket by Matt Navarre and a three-pointer from the top of the key by Brent Abendroth.
Pettisville's Alex Frey then went on a tear, scoring nine straight points as the Birds took a 22-19 lead.
After exchanging baskets, Ottawa Hills led 28-27 when Jared Avina was fouled shooting a half-court shot with four tenths (.4) of a second left. The PHS junior made two of three free throws to give Pettisville a 29-28 edge at the half.
Pettisville took control early in the third quarter, as A. Frey and Quinn Nofziger hit threepointers to raise the lead to 35- 28.
After Abendroth hit one of two free throws, Pettisville's Josh Bruner's put-back made the score 37-29. A. Frey sank another trey, Logan Frey hit a deuce, and PHS was ahead 42- 29.
The Green Bears staged a mini-comeback, scoring six of the quarter's last eight points to be down by nine points, 44- 35, heading into the final eight minutes.
The fourth quarter featured 22 free throws after Ottawa Hills fell behind 50-43 and starting fouling. Pettisville was sent to the line 12 times and made eight, including five of six by Nofziger.
L. Frey's basket scored Pettisville's last two points, giving the Birds a 64-53 lead.
Philip Beans, the Green Bears' 6-foot-7 center, scored their last five points, making a conventional three-pointer and two final foul shots for the 64- 58 final.
Beans led all scorers with 24 points. Abendroth was also in double figures, with 21.
Pettisville shot 22/53 from the field, including 5/16 from behind the arc.
The Birds were 15/23 from the free-throw line.
A. Frey paced the Blackbirds with 23 points. Nofziger and L. Frey chipped in 17 and 10, respectively.
OH was 17/43 from the field and 21/27 from the line.
Both teams had 14 turnovers, and Pettisville out-rebounded the Bears 36-26.
