Golden Notes Of Archbold's Memorable Past Ten Years Ago Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997 Headline- Cable Television System Could Make Comeback In a feature article community members start the New Year with resolutions. Bill Phelps hopes to stop procrastinating as much; Mari Yoder hopes to exercise three times a week; Kate Emch will try to keep my room clean so that I can walk through it; Joemy Buschur to study more and not stay up so late; Lindsay Miller to improve in track and get my driver license as soon as possible; Steve Ringenberg to continue to make Fairlawn the retirement community of choice; Todd Ziegler wants to lose 20 pounds and continue to beat Marv Miller, Jeff Frank, and Trevor Frank in golf each time they play; Jim Selgo will try to spend more time reading leisure books instead of professional books and journals. Melvin and Ruth Lange will sell Lange's Bakery to their youngest son, Tim, and his wife, Bonnie, as of Jan. 1. The Langes started the business in 1954 and plan to continue working there. The bakery has four full-time and 11 part-time employees. 50th Anniversary- Wilbur and Viola Sigg, Dec. 25; Ralph and Lenore Heer, Jan. 18 Deaths- Huldah M. Sauder, 87, Archbold; Judy L. Singer, 54, Defiance; Nichole Woodall, 17, Stryker Nichole Woodall, 17, Stryker, became the 13th Fulton County traffic fatality Dec. 23. At 25 years of age, Jennifer Kidder says she's really lucky. She is the first executive director of Archbold Parks and Recreation. After six months on the job she has launched new projects. Commenting on a community owned cablevision system, Chuck Rychener said, he is not in favor. "Television is okay, but it does deaden the mind," he said. Melissa, daughter of Zeno and Beverly Miller, was recently named a student manager of food services at Hillsdale College. A student manager, Miller supervises student workers in the dining hall, and oversees and organizes meals served there. Earns Degree- Jonathan R. Mignin, Adrian (Mich.) College, bachelor's of arts in elementary education Miller Bros., Construction will break ground on a sevenmile project to improve US Rt. 30, east to Ohio Rt. 235 in Hancock County. Twenty-Five Years Ago Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1983 For the first time in the 16- year history of the Archbold income tax gross collections topped the one-million-dollar mark in 1982. A house at 305 Murbach Street burned New Year's Day and resulted in the hospitalization of three persons: Allen Kelley, 54, his wife Cheri, 40, and four-month-old granddaughter, Ilyana Miller, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Miller. Names listed in the 1907 Archbold telephone directory: 31 Shorts; 23 Rupps; 30 Nofzingers; 10 Burkholders; 9 Griesers. Cleaning and making repairs is a never-ending job and Roger Ziegler spent parts of four days at the task in the American Legion Hall. "I'm on vacation right now," he said, "so I decided to get some muchneeded work done." A photograph shows three up-and-coming cheerleaders at a basketball game. Fifty Years Ago Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1958 A three-year expansion program was completed at La Choy Food Products. The company now has 25 bean sproutgrowing bins, and harvests 50 tons of sprouts a day. Bil-Jax, Inc., hit a new alltime peak in production and sales. They plan to open a plant in Mexico City to manufacture scaffolding. Sauder Woodworking reports another record year. They have eight groups of tables with over 50 items in the line and will show seven new tables at the market. The Archbold water system doubled in size. During the year they sold 200 million gallons of water. Yoder & Frey, Inc., sold a record 32,912 pieces of farm machinery in 1957. Gordon Cavalier, 29, Gary, Ind., son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Aungst, also of Gary, was killed in an auto accident while returning from a bowling alley to his home Friday evening. George Clark, science teacher, and T.L. Parker, mathematics teacher, attended a science conference at Defiance College Monday. Robert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Roth, will march in the California Rose Bowl Parade with the OSU marching band. Firemen were called to the Lawrence Baer farm west of Pettisville where a brooder house burned Christmas morning. Seventy-Five Years Ago Wednesday Jan. 4, 1933 There was a change in the Fulton County courthouse Monday that was unequaled in county history. Eight new offi- cials were ushered into office, six are Democrats. Mayor Theo. Dimke and village councilmen: H.T. Brown, John S. Schlatter, Peter Lugbill, A.J. Stamm, O.R. Taylor, and clerk Warren H. Fetters, and treasurer O.P. Kluepfel met in the Town & Township Hall Monday evening for the first meeting of the new year. County commissioners Emil D. Rupp, L.E. Murray, and Ed. Russell with surveyor Carl Mohr, made an inspection tour of Rt. 66, south of Archbold Tuesday. Mayor Dimke called attention to the excellent financial condition of the village and its ability to meet bills. Married- Orlo Schultz, Archbold, and O'Neil Hodges of Strawberry Ark. Alfred Spiess and his son shot a large badger they caught on a trip Thursday morning. The carcass of the beast was on display in the show window of the Vernier McLaughlin Probeck Co. A badger can dig up a lot of ground in a short time. They dig for grubs. German Township Trustees re-organized with Wm. Leininger as president; N.J. Rychener as vice president; and A.T. Desbouefs as clerk. The bridge across the Maumee leading to Inidanola Island was washed away by the flow of ice, near Maumee Sunday. 100 Years Ago Friday, Jan. 3, 1907 R.L. Bernath, veterinary physician and surgeon, graduate of OSU, and registered and licensed to practice in the state, has opened an office in the Red Cross Drug store and will answer calls by day and night.- adv. Eli Short, of Elmira, is suffering with a rising on his right hand. There will be a lecture at the Pettisville schoolhouse next Friday evening by a Hindu from Indiana. Defiance- As a Christmas gift Defiance city council increased the salary of the mayor $200 a year. He now gets $600. Rich Fred Flory bought the Peter Flory farm at auction Tuesday. The price was a little over $110 an acre. Montpelier- Two business buildings and forty-four dwellings have been erected in Montpelier during the last year. C.C. Roth bought the Schmucker place near Elmira for $75 an acre. The low price is due to the condition of the land. J.R. Hoffmire was showing friends around town a new $20 gold piece Tuesday.
