Butterflies Tagged For Trip

Top, from left: Kelly Matthews, 13, and her mother Ruth, Pettisville, assist Pat Hayes, a monarch butterfly enthusiast and researcher, in tagging a monarch in preparation for its trip to Mexico. Each year, monarchs make an annual migration south for the winter. Lower left: a monarch sits on a hand prior to takeoff. Lower right: Hayes holds a monarch, with a tag on the leading edge of one wing. The butterflies were tagged during an event, Sunday, Sept. 7 at a property on St. Rt. 2 west of Co. Rd. 19 owned by Ed and Carol Nofziger, Archbold. The Nofzigers have placed the land in a federal conservation reserve program and created a habitat for butterflies, birds, and other species. Hayes said about 70 people attended the event, including many children.- photos by David Pugh
