The Archbold High School golf team opened its season with a fourth-place finish in the Defiance High School Invitational at Auglaize Country Club, Monday, Aug. 11. Bryan won the invite with a team score of 295. Anthony Wayne was second with a 300; Wauseon, last year's winner, was third with a 300. More ... Eighteen letterwinners return to John Downey, Archbold head coach, when the football season kicks off, Friday, Aug. 22 as the Streaks host Ayersville. AHS hopes to build on a successful 2007 season when they went 7-4 overall with a postseason appearance, and 6-2 in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League. More ... The Archbold girls tennis team opened its fall season with losses at Bowling Green, Lima Bath, and Springfield last week. The Bobcats blanked the Streaks 5-0, Tuesday, Aug. 12. Archbold lost to Lima Bath, Wednesday, Aug. 13 and Springfield, Saturday, Aug. 16 by identical 3-2 scores. More ... "The boys squad will begin a rebuild this year, using experienced seniors to mentor the motivated freshman," said Mike Wachtmann, AHS head cross country coach. "As far as the girls squad goes, we have a small but dedicated group. They will make great strides individually while competing as a close and supportive team. More ... Sam Hornish Jr., AHS '98 and Indianapolis 500 winner, returned to racing in front of his home crowd, Sunday, Aug. 17 in the Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway, Brooklyn, Mich. After qualifying in the 23rd position, Hornish battled an ill-handling condition throughout the day before finishing the 200-lap race in 22nd place. More ... Julie Nofziger, Archbold head volleyball coach, welcomes back four letterwinners for her sixth year at the helm of the Blue and Gold and 26th year of coaching. She lost four letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 23-2 and laid claim to a Northwest Ohio Athletic League title with a perfect 8-0 record. More ... Experience could be the key for the Pettisville volleyball team this year with five returning letterwinners, four of whom were starters last year. The Birds finished 15-11, 7-3 in the Buckeye Border Conference, and were district finalists. More ... Pettisville cross country returns seven letterwinners on the boys' side and five on the girls' for Tom Wagner, head coach. Wagner said it will be hard to replace Alex Frey, last year's team captain and most valuable player in the Buckeye Border Conference. But the boys team's strong leadership and experience at the state level is a strength, as are good numbers. More ... Wade Rychener, AHS '06, was the recipient of the Tyler Williams Best Sportsman award in the David Betts Federation Baseball League tournament. Rychener is the son of Dan and Jan, Archbold.
