AHS Grad Is TV Journalist In Vegas

Dan Ball Dan Ball Dan Ball, a 1993 Archbold High School graduate, recently joined KVBC-TV in Las Vegas, Nev., as a television anchor and reporter.

Previously, Ball was the morning anchor at the CBS affiliate in Palm Springs, Calif. He did a lot of entertainment reporting there, covering the Oscars (film awards), Emmys (television awards), Grammys (music awards), and film festivals.

Prior to that, Ball was the morning anchor in Fresno, Calif.

Las Vegas is the 43rd largest television market in the country, while Palm Springs is 143rd. Fresno is 57th.

Growing Up In Archbold

Ball began his career right after high school, when he entered the Air Force as a combat journalist for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Network.

"Archbold was a wonderful place to grow up," he said. "I speak in a lot of schools about my career, and I have to say that Archbold High is an exceptional school.

"The teachers and administrators were very involved and seem to really care about the students. In my travels I have seen a lot of inner city schools where the students don't have the advantages that kids have in Archbold.

"My speech class with Mrs. Roach really helped me to focus my gift of gab, which comes in very handy in my biz, and Mrs. Stotzer in guidance counseling tried to keep me on track."

Follow Your Dreams

Ball also won an Emmy for his anchoring and reporting of the nationally televised funeral of Gerald Ford, former US president.

What is his advice to today's AHS graduates?

"Always follow your dreams, no matter what your background is," said Ball.

"Some kids in that small town may feel that because they don't have the right last name, or hang with the in crowd, or have enough money, that their future may not be as bright as others.

"That's not the case. You have the power to control your future- no one else, so go for it.

"And remember, live life each and every day like it's your last one, and try to laugh a little each and every day.

"With what's going on with my brother Don and his battle with cancer, I have really tried to make every day count."

Ball, a son of Ernie Ball and Becky Collins, both of Archbold, is married to the former Dena Messner, formerly of Bryan. They have a 10-month-old daughter, Avery Ilene.
