Pettisville is a remarkable community, just as all Northwest Ohio communities are remarkable. It is a community filled with people who care about their town.
The school is the center of life in Pettisville. Residents of the Pettisville school district have stepped up to support the school generously. They have voted to carry more tax burden, so that their children can have the best education possible.
Now, the state of Ohio is offering to pay four-fifths of the cost of a new $20 million school building for Pettisville. Voters of the school district must pick up the rest of the tab- about $3.85 million.
The Pettisville Local School District can have a new, state-of-the-art building for less than 20 cents on the dollar.
But some say a new building is not needed; the cost is too high; and with the sluggish economy, this is the wrong time.
Pettisville students can continue in the old obsolete building, and the school board can continue to put large sums into repair and upkeep.
But here's a chance for a new, energyeffi cient building, designed for today's teaching methods, for a mere fraction of the cost. Such an opportunity may not present itself ever again.
There is a time for conservatism, but there is also a time to be bold and seize opportunity.
This is the time to support a new school for Pettisville.
