Street Contractor Fined $19,500 For Const. Delay

Village of Archbold officials have withheld $19,500 from Brooks Contracting, Inc., the firm hired for the East Williams Street-North Lincoln Street reconstruction project.

Dennis Howell, Archbold Village administrator, told members of Archbold Village Council he "was not happy with the gentleman," and that he "would be opposed to giving him any more work in the Village of Archbold."

His remarks came during council's Monday, Jan. 21 meeting.

The company was the low bidder for the 2007 project, offering to rebuild the two streets for $465,836. The bid was more than $34,000 under the engineer's $500,000 estimate.

The contract between the company and the village called for the project to be completed by Sept. 1, 2007, but the company missed the deadline.

Howell said after allowing for weather delays, the company missed the deadline by 39 days. At $500 per day, the total came to $19,500.

Howell told councilmen that representatives of the construction firm have not signed final documents agreeing to the withholding, but added the village is also withholding the final payment to the firm.
