JR. HIGH SPORTS DIGEST
Archbold Middle School Wrestling

The Blue Streaks competed in the inaugural Rod Dinkens Duel Invitational at Maumee High School, the weekend of Dec. 15. Dinkens, a Maumee junior high wrestling coach, was killed in an accident last year, just a week before the season started.

The Streaks started in a pool of three teams, with Fassett and Eisenhower. Archbold went 2-0, beating Fassett 50- 34 and Eisenhower 62-0.

Archbold then moved to the championship bracket, facing a very competitive Arbor Hills team in the first round. The Streaks are forfeiting five of the 16 weight classes, which puts them down 30-0 before matches even start.

The Streaks opened with a pin from Ben Eggers at 80 pounds. Down 30-6, the Streaks put together seven straight wins behind pins by Jose Hernandez, Jordan Cowell, Tyler Rufenacht, Brad Lawrence and Zach Driver.

Two technical falls by Oliver Stuckey and Danny Young put the Streaks up 46-30. Archbold came away with a 46- 39 victory to move to the championship semifinals, where Archbold competed against Oak Harbor. Archbold lost 61-24, but had impressive wins from Cody Kovneskey, Hernandez, and Colin Dallas, with all three getting pins. Oak Harbor was void at 172 lbs. for the remaining 6 points.

The loss dropped Archbold to the consolation finals against Timberstone. After getting a major decision from Eggers, the Streaks were down 30-4 going into the 116-lb. weight class. Archbold got six pins out of the remaining 10 weight classes, but still came up short, 48-40.Getting pins were Stuckey, Young, Kovneskey, Cowell Rufenacht and Mitch Campbell.

The Blue Streaks ended fourth with a 3-2 record. Grant Burkholder and Dave Eicher, coaches, were very pleased with their team's performance.

"Even though we knew going into each match (we were) down 30-0, the guys wrestled hard the entire day," said Burkholder.
