The Continental Pirates, under Kevin Homier, head boys basketball coach, came sailing into Archbold, Thursday, Dec. 20, looking for a little pirate gold.
The young squad needed more of a Christmas miracle and the Blue Streaks dropped their visitors 67-39.
The Streaks upped their record to 7-1; the Pirates fell to 0-8.
Continental's starting five consisted of two freshmen and three sophomores. One lone senior, along with five additional sophomores and one more freshman, made up its squad.
"We knew this year would be tough," said Homier. "We are very optimistic about this group of kids. There is no negativity. We know what we have here, and it is going to take time." A Archbold jumped out to a 7-2 lead and was never threatened, holding a 19-9 advantage after the first eight minutes and a 34- 19 lead at the half.
Gene Goering, AHS, led all scorers with 27 points, 17 in the first half. Justin Rupp chipped in nine.
The Pirates had a bright spot in sophomore starter Damon Schmidt. He led the Pirates with 22 of their 39 points.
Archbold opened the second half with Goering scoring on a Pirate turnover, followed by back-to-back buckets by Trey Smith, before Continental's Ben Schwarzman hit a deuce at the 5:50 mark.
The Streaks went on to outscore the Pirates 9-8 in the period's closing minutes for a 49- 29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The foul line has become the Streaks' bread and butter in the fourth, and this game was no different, as AHS connected on 8/8 and hit 26/33 for the game.
Archbold bucketed 18 points to Continental's 10 in the fourth for the 67-39 final.
Unofficially AHS out-rebounded the Pirates 23-16 and committed 19 turnovers to CHS's 24, with 13 in the first half.
"Our turnovers were terrible. Six the second half is not bad, but 13 the first half is something we can't do," said Doug Krauss, AHS coach.
"Give Continental some credit to that, too. They put pressure on us, but we have to keep our poise, and we didn't do that the first half.
"They came in here and were aggressive. With their youth, we thought we could take care of some situations defensively and force some turnovers, and hopefully get some offense out of that, and we did.
"We went to the foul line a lot. At times it wasn't a real pretty game, but sometimes that is how the game plays," said Krauss.
"We played hard," said Homier. "We missed some shots early; if we could have gotten some of those to fall, maybe we could have gotten some confi- dence. But Archbold is a great basketball team, always wellcoached."
