It was 39 years in the making.

Finally, a regular-season rematch between the Archbold and Pettisville boys basketball teams took place. The tradition restarted this Christmas season.

The Blackbirds, under the guidance of Greg Nofziger, made the short trip to Archbold, Saturday, Dec. 15, to face Doug Krauss and the Streaks.

Packed to the ceiling, more than 1,800 fans gave the feeling that it hasn't been 39 years since the two squads last played; it was more like an annual meeting with each side wanting bragging rights for a year.

The revitalized rivalry was won 58-47 by the hometown Streaks, upping their record to 6-1. The loss dropped the Birds to 5-1.

"This was a great learning experience for us," said Nofziger. "We have nine new players. They have not been in this type of atmosphere in their lives, so this was just a great game for them. Hopefully, the next time it happens we are a little bit better prepared."

" I tip my hat to both communities. As far as I could see, everything went really well," said Krauss.

Using a fast start, the Streaks jumped out to an 18-9 first-quarter lead and were never threatened. Gene Goering took the opening tip and buried a threepointer followed by back-to-back threes from Justin Rupp.

The Blackbirds finally scored when Michael Haase sank a foul shot at the 4:21 mark.

Trey Smith added a five-footer and Colton Martinez nailed the Streaks' fourth three of the quarter for a 14-1 lead.

Logan Frey hit for the Birds and Quinn Nofziger added a put-back, closing the gap to 14- 5.

L. Frey, who paced PHS with 20 points, closed out the Birds' scoring in the quarter with back-to-back buckets, but the host still held an 18-9 lead.

"Logan Frey is a load," said Krauss. "We knew that. He loves his right hand and goes to the rack. Give him a lot of credit; he played an awful good game out there."

"We have to come out of the gates a little quicker," said Nofziger. "I thought we got the looks we wanted; we just didn't finish.

"I had some seniors that had trouble early on, but once they settled in I thought Logan Frey just carried us. He just said, 'Jump on fellows, and I'll take you.'

"It was hard to get anybody else to step in and go with him. That is something we will have to do in the future. I am proud of our kids."

Pettisville opened the second quarter on a Josh Bruner baseline drive. The Streaks answered by rattling off the next five points: Goering hit a jumper and David Rupp hit a pair at the charity stripe.

For the game the Blue and Gold sizzled from the foul line, hitting 16/20. The Blackbirds struggled, hitting 1/7 in the first half and finishing the game with 9/21.

Archbold was held to just one field goal and one trey in the second quarter, but connected on 5/6 from the charity stripe.

L. Frey added a three and Alex Frey hit a deuce with 15 seconds remaining, closing the gap to 28-21 at the midway point.

"Both teams just played their hearts out," said Nofziger.

"There were loose balls everywhere, and both teams were getting after it offensively and defensively.

"We have to improve on foul shooting and we had way too many turnovers."

"I told the guys before the game that Pettisville is a team that will come after us and play hard for 32 minutes, and they certainly did that," said Krauss. "We did have a pretty good start to the game.

"We turned the ball over a few more times than we wanted, and I'm sure Pettisville did too, but that shows how hard both teams were going at it defensively."

Archbold had 17 turnovers to Pettisville's 18.

Archbold Pulls Ahead

Goering started the third by muscling his way inside for two.

The Archbold senior led all scorers with 24 points. Teammate Justin Rupp chipped in 13.

Pettisville answered Goering's bucket with L. Frey and Bruner hitting back-to-back buckets.

From there, Archbold went on a 9-0 run to build a 14-point lead with two minutes left in the quarter.

AHS held a 44-32 advantage to start the final eight minutes.

Pettisville outscored the Streaks 15-14 in the final period for the 58-47 final.

The Streaks sizzled from the floor, hitting 54 percent (17/32). Pettisville's shooting was as cold as the December air, hitting just 39 percent (17/44).

AHS 66, Bryan 40

Archbold traveled to Bryan, Friday, Dec. 14 and came home with a 66-40 Northwest Ohio Athletic League victory.

Jumping out to a 18-4 lead after the first quarter, the Streaks cruised to their third league victory with no losses.

Goering paced Archbold with 22 points. Smith chipped in 16.
