Latta Wins 5th District Congressional Race
Republican Wins Every County
Robert Latta, (R- Bowling Green) will take over the 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives once held by his father, after defeating challenger Robin Weirauch (DNapoleon) in a special election Tuesday, Dec. 11.
Unofficial results from the Wood County Board of Elections showed Latta with 56,367 votes, or about 57%, to Weirauch's 42,563, or approximately 43%. There were 186 write-in votes.
Latta won all 16 counties in the Fifth Congressional District.
Of the approximately 24% of registered voters who went to the polls in Fulton County, 3,742 cast ballots for Latta, compared to 3,035 for Weirauch.
The Fulton County percentages were about 55.2% for Latta, compared to roughly 44.8% for Weirauch. The margin of victory was 707 votes.
Latta did better in Henry County, despite the fact Henry County is Weirauch's home county. Henry County voters cast 3,461 votes for Latta, compared to 2,558 for Weirauch. That translates into 57.5% of the vote for Latta, and 42.5% for Weirauch.
Twenty of Fulton County's 35 precincts went for Latta, mainly in the western end of the county. There were 14 precincts that went for Weirauch.
The Fayette precinct was a tie, with 72 votes for each candidate.
There were seven write-in votes in Fulton County and 12 in Henry County.
Latta won both Freedom and Ridgeville townships in Henry County.
The special election was required after Paul Gillmor (R-Tiffin) died in his Virginia apartment Sept. 5.
