Looking to rebound from an opening season loss to Wauseon, the Archbold boys basketball team declawed Liberty Center 69-35 in its Northwest Ohio Athletic League opener, Friday, Nov. 30.
Archbold holds a 1-1 record, 1-0 in league action. The Tigers are 0-1, 0-1 NWOAL.
"This was a good way to start league play. I thought our kids played solid all night," said Doug Krauss, AHS head coach.
The fast start by the Streaks proved to be too much for the Tigers to overcome. AHS was on the board first, with David Rupp scoring on a layup. Justin Rupp hit a foul shot, D. Rupp scored a put-back, and the Blue and Gold kept rolling.
J. Rupp and Gene Goering each hit a pair at the charity stripe. Smith bucketed three the hard way with three straight foul shots. D. Rupp came back with two, and the Streaks were ahead 14-0.
The Tigers finally got on the board at the three-minute mark on a put-back by Jordan Burdue, but the damage was already done. LC tallied five more points before the quarter expired to face an 18-7 deficit.
"The fast start was positive," said Krauss. "We always try to do that, and sometimes you do and sometimes you don't. I thought our guys came out did a nice job defensively to give us that."
"Our slow start, I guess, we will attribute to opening night," said Ryan Miller, LC head coach.
"Opening night on the road against a powerhouse like Archbold is a tough task for us right now, but I thought our kids stuck in there and gave a good effort."
Archbold stretched its lead to 35-19 at halftime, then opened things up in the third quarter.
Holding LC to just two field goals, the Streaks converted three straight Tiger turnovers into points. D. Rupp opened the third quarter, scoring on a LC turnover. Goering, who led the Streaks with 17 points, hit a pair at the foul line.
Colton Martinez picked up a half-court steal and converted it into two AHS points, then came up with another steal and added two more.
"Colton has the capability to score off those turnovers" said Krauss. "If you look back to the Wauseon game, we didn't convert our turnovers. We forced turnovers, but we didn't get many points."
Getting in the passing lanes "was something we worked on this week, and Colton certainly has the capability to do that," said Krauss.
D. Rupp forced another LC turnover at mid-court and spotted Martinez for an open layup. Martinez added a jumper and finished the night with 11 points.
Breon Price connected for one at the free throw line to close out the third with a 51-23 lead.
The Streaks outscored LC 18- 12 in the fourth for the 69-35 victory.
The Tigers committed 27 turnovers compared to five for AHS. LC was 11/46 from the field for 24% and 10/15 from the line for 67%. Burdue led the Tigers with 13 points.
AHS was 25/52 from the field for 48% and 16/22 from the line for 73%.
AHS 67, Kalida 50
The Streaks jumped out to a 21-8 first-quarter lead on their way to a 67-50 non-league victory over the Wildcats.
The middle two quarters were played evenly, and AHS outscored Kalida 21-16 in the fourth. Goering led all scorers with 27 points. Smith had 24.
Ryan Kleman led Kalida with 16.
The two teams were even from the field: AHS was 19/42, including seven treys, while Kalida was 20/40, including four treys.
Archbold took control using the foul line, converting 22 of its 29 free throw attempts. Kalida was six of 13.
