Ayersville outscored Pettisville 17-11 in the fourth quarter to win the Div. IV district championship at Napoleon, Friday night, Feb. 29 by a 44-36 score.
The Birds came back from an 8-3 first-quarter deficit to lead 22-17 at halftime. PHS kept the lead until Ayersville's Mathew Martin hit a turnaround jumper with just under a minute to go in the third period for a 26-25 AHS lead.
Pettisville was within two, 36-34, with 1:34 left but was forced to foul. The Pilots hit eight of 10 foul shots down the stretch to preserve the win.
The Birds bow out with a 17-6 record. Ayersville (21-2), ranked 10th in the state in Div. IV in the final AP poll, advances to a regional semfinal Tuesday night, March 4, at Bowling Green.
District Semifinal: Pettisville 58, PH 38
Pettisville defeated Patrick Henry 58-38 in a Div. IV boys basketball district semifinal, Wednesday night, Feb. 27 at Napoleon.
The Patriots led only four times the entire game: 2-0, 4-2, 4-3, and 8-6. After Pettisville tied the score at 8 with 3:04 left in the first quarter they led the rest of the game.
The Birds held a 15-8 advantage after one quarter and were ahead 23-14 at the half. PHS built a 32-16 lead with 4:52 left in the third before PH climbed back to within nine, 34-25, with two-and-a-half minutes left in the period. The Birds scored the period's final three points and built the lead back to 12 at the end of the third at 37-25.
The closest the Patriots got in the fourth quarter was 12 points.
